Late last month, the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG) took place at the Grand Thèâtre complete with a red carpet entrance, cameras and impressive light show on the façade. The ceremony is comparable to the Academy Awards, though, in place of the famed movie stars are the creators of the world’s finest timepieces. The event hosts over 1,500 guests, including the President of the Swiss Federation, Ueli Maurer and Mayor of Geneva, Sandrine Salerno as well as prominent leaders and influencers in horology. Lucky for me, I was sitting front row for all the excitement.

Each year a jury is selected to award the finest watches and most important operators in the watchmaking industry in addition to saluting excellence in worldwide horological production. The elite and qualified jury voted by secret ballot. Members of the jury included watch historians and industry experts like iW’s contributing writer, Elizabeth Doerr, and celebrities such as musician John Mayer and famed French designer Philippe Starck.
