Nomos’ Elegant Metro

As we previewed in a recent newsletter, Nomos has added a 33mm rose gold model to its Metro collection, which previously included one rose gold model (a rose gold Neomatik 39mm model introduced in 2017).

The new Nomos Metro in a 33mm rose gold case.

At 33mm in diameter, this newest watch is also the smallest Metro to date. And while this new smaller-cased example is as legible as all the other Metro models, despite its new size, the new rose gold Metro is also possibly the warmest and most elegant Metro of the collection.

And make no mistake, it’s the new golden glow that confers this elegance. The warmth of the gold extends from the case to the hands, all of which are also made of rose gold. Violet minute markers break, very subtly, from the dial design we saw on the only other gold Metro from a few years ago, which featured the same hands and dial color.

Inside Nomos has placed its excellent hand-wound Alpha caliber, nicely decorated and perfectly visible through the sapphire caseback. A beige velour leather strap and rose gold winged clasp add finishing touches.

Modern, feminine

Nomos’ designer Mark Braun notes that the golden glow enhances the small sized Metro’s feminine aspect.

“With Metro rose gold 33, we are using precious metal in a modern way,” he says.

Metro’s round case, wire lugs and tapered hands were meant from the start (in 2014) to convey an “aesthetic reminiscent of precision tools,” according to Nomos, and Nomos has successfully built this profile into the line ever since. Precision is strongly conveyed in part because just about every Metro is made with a steel case (in a variety of sizes), and with and without complications.

While the 2017 Metro rose gold Neomatik 39 also featured a rose gold case, it was designed for larger wrists – and deeper pockets. Not so, obviously, with this new model.

“We wanted to reach all watch wearers—and a smaller Metro in gold is the logical next step,” Braun added.

Once again, Nomos’ logic is flawless. But while the new size will very likely appeal to a wider set of feminine buyers, I wouldn’t rule out seeing this Nomos Metro 33mm rose gold on wrists across the gender spectrum.
