Presenting what it calls a “new philosophy placing the smartphone in the service of the watch,” Breitling today launched its B55 Connected, an analog-digital watch that communicates with mobile devices.
Developed from its 2014 Caliber B50, a multifunction chronograph movement, Breitling created the new model to enable two-way communication that allows the functions of the phone and the watch to each complement each other.
Owners of the 45mm B55 Connected can use their phone to perform certain adjustments (time-setting, timezones, alarms, display and operating parameters, night mode). Conversely, the user may also upload the results of various measurements, like time flights, from the chronograph to the smartphone so as to be able to read them more easily, store them or pass them on. The watch’s battery can be recharged via USB, though Breitling has not yet indicated how long a full charge might last and has not yet specified the devices to which the new watch will sync.
The new model retains an ultra-technical look via its titanium case with black carbon-based coating and a dial that features a blue wireless symbol. This blue and black theme continues on the rubber strap. The two LCD screens activate when the pusher is pressed, or whenever the watch is tilted at a 35-degree angle. This feature is particularly helpful when the user needs to keep his hand on the controls or steering wheel.
Unlike nearly any other ‘smart’ type watch, the B55 Connected is a COSC-certified quartz chronometer as it uses Breitling’s already highly accurate thermo-compensated Superquartz movement.
The watch’s functions include:
-Electronic tachometer,
-Countdown/count-up system enabling a sequence of countdown and “long duration” timing (Mission Elapsed Time) operations
-Aviation-oriented “chrono flight” device that is useful in recording flight times while memorizing the takeoff time, landing time and date.
-Second timezone, two daily alarms, perpetual calendar with week display, battery charge indicator.
We’ll let you know when we learn more about the availability of the new watch and its price.
