Celebrated in over 192 countries each year on April 22, Earth Day was established to demonstrate support for environmental protection. It was observed for the first time in 1970, and has now grown worldwide to become the Earth Day Network.
This occasion offers a fitting opportunity to not only honor the gifts the Earth provides, but to also consider the impact of our footprint on our home planet and the ways to minimize negative effects.

Citizen Eco-Drive
While tons of single-use batteries are discarded each year, here’s an example of a watch that will never need a battery replacement and will run just about forever: the Citizen Eco-Drive. Citizen’s light-power concept was introduced to Asia, Latin America and Europe in 1995 and to the U. S. in 1996, and it virtually eliminated the need for battery changes. According to Citizen, “Eco-Drive technology harnesses the power of light – from any natural or artificial light source – and converts it into energy that is stored in a permanently rechargeable lithium-ion cell. It recharges continuously in any kind of light to run forever.”

Citizen L Circle of Time
Citizen’s newest Eco-Drive model for women is the limited edition Citizen L Circle of Time, inspired by the beauty of the changing seasons. The Citizen L was first introduced late last year, and it is now augmented by four new watches celebrating spring, summer, fall and winter with color schemes and designs befitting each. The watches feature mother-of-pearl decorated dials and colorful crocodile straps.

It seems perfectly fitting that as these new watches capture the glory of the seasons, they also honor the Earth in another way: powered by any light source these watches never need a battery.
